On Cleo Miller ...

Excerpt from the March 2013 GHS ’70 Newsletter

I saw Mr Cleo Miller at the Feb 22 Garrett vs Manchester basketball game (where Dan Yarde was inducted into the GHS Wall of Fame at halftime).

Jim Burns pointed him out, so I asked if I could take his picture for the GHS ’70 Newsletter, and he graciously agreed. We talked a little, and I learned he retired in 1992 after teaching for 36 years, and lives a bit north of Fort Wayne.

Back in the day I very much disliked school, but distinctly remember having genuine respect for Mr Miller’s science classes. He knew his subject matter and was a good lecturer; at least such is my recollection, which probably means he was in reality even better yet!

Touring the new High School at the January dedication, I met a new, young science teacher, Nicole Snider, who posed with a classroom skeleton.I wondered then, was this the skeleton that was in Mr Miller’s classroom for so many years?

Then I wondered, was there really such a skeleton, or am I remembering a college class?

But tonight I wonder, as I type, will Miss or Mrs Snider teach Garrett kids for thirty-six years, and a decade or more later still be interested to attend Garrett High School events? I hope so, but will likely never know … What I do know (or at least what I believe) is that we were fortunate to have held Mr Cleo Miller’s interest for so long. Thank you Cleo Miller!

  1. We were fortunate. GHS had so many quality folks and the town gave us oppertunities that made a difference in our lives then and now.
