Do you still have your class jacket?

Excerpt from the March 2013 GHS ’70 Newsletter

Last month Tom Refner promised to wear his next month which is now this month, and I promised to make him that month’s pinup.

Not bad at all considering we got the jackets as sophomores, 45 years ago!

And look, you can still see the second-grade boy in today’s man, 53 years later.

Thinking of You and GHS '70 Fortunes

Excerpt from the March 2013 GHS ’70 Newsletter

Back row: Bob Woodward, Lauren Fike, Dan Yarde, Mike Rhodes, Brian Custer, Dave Kobiella, Tom Refner, Dan Myers, Stephen Rowe

Front Row: Dave Ashenfelter, Jim Burns, Bob Bishop, Randy Brumbaugh, Greg Weller, Steve Treesh, Cindy Hathaway Myers, Hal Hippensteel

Kathy Creager VanAllen came late, but was very much there when present.

Thanks to Cindy Hathaway Myers for the “Thinking of You” sign – so thoughtful, we really need more women to come more often.

The sign was intended most immediately for Vicki Miller Hodge and Cindy Nodine DeWitt, who are facing medical challenges, but know also of our thoughts for all classmates who cannot attend. Every luncheon evokes fond remembrance of various absent classmates, some living close by, some living afar, and some departed …

I created this graphic with photos of genuine AuburnPeking Buffet fortune cookies, text from bona-fide luncheon fortunes, and the Peking Buffet’s photo within the “Thinking of You” photo above.

On Cleo Miller ...

Excerpt from the March 2013 GHS ’70 Newsletter

I saw Mr Cleo Miller at the Feb 22 Garrett vs Manchester basketball game (where Dan Yarde was inducted into the GHS Wall of Fame at halftime).

Jim Burns pointed him out, so I asked if I could take his picture for the GHS ’70 Newsletter, and he graciously agreed. We talked a little, and I learned he retired in 1992 after teaching for 36 years, and lives a bit north of Fort Wayne.

Back in the day I very much disliked school, but distinctly remember having genuine respect for Mr Miller’s science classes. He knew his subject matter and was a good lecturer; at least such is my recollection, which probably means he was in reality even better yet!

Touring the new High School at the January dedication, I met a new, young science teacher, Nicole Snider, who posed with a classroom skeleton.I wondered then, was this the skeleton that was in Mr Miller’s classroom for so many years?

Then I wondered, was there really such a skeleton, or am I remembering a college class?

But tonight I wonder, as I type, will Miss or Mrs Snider teach Garrett kids for thirty-six years, and a decade or more later still be interested to attend Garrett High School events? I hope so, but will likely never know … What I do know (or at least what I believe) is that we were fortunate to have held Mr Cleo Miller’s interest for so long. Thank you Cleo Miller!
