July 2012

Reminder that the monthly, 4th Monday GHS ’70 Luncheon is right around the corner, noon July 23 at Auburn’s Peking Buffet (@Grandstaff&SR8, 260.925.2746). Last month saw Dave Ashenfelter, Bob Bishop, Jim Burns, Kathy VanAllen, Mike Rhodes, and myself. Clyde Handshoe had intended to show, but was not feeling well enough come the time – hope to see Clyde and at least a few other new people this time, including some more of the women … it isn’t fair that Kathy alone gets all of us, though the guys certainly aren’t complaining, Kathy is GREAT!

Upcoming Events

This very Friday and Saturday (just before the Monday luncheon) are the annual Garrett Alumni Day events. I’ve lost my 2012 schedule, but 2011 featured:

v  Friday

Ø  8:00AM golf event

Ø  9:00AM historic walk around town, starts at library

Ø  7:00PM-9:00PM band at East Side Park across from school [Mike Rhodes, Jim Burns, and I will be opening the pavilion at 6:30]

Ø  7:00PM-midnight open house at Legion, open to all

v  Saturday

Ø  12:00 Noon Alumni Luncheon

Ø  1:00PM program in Performing Arts Auditorium

There typically haven’t been many youngsters like us at the Alumni Luncheon, but we’re almost all 60+ now, and maybe it’s time we brought up the rear, so to speak. Personally I cannot make this event this year but definitely plan to register for the following year, and will attend this Friday’s walk around town. To be put on the official mailing list for these events, send your name, address, and $5 check to Garrett Alumni Association, PO Box 55, Garrett, IN 46738.

People

Mary Kay (Yoder) Weeks’ husband Doug passed away on June 18. Many have offered their condolences, and many who haven’t explicitly reached out still hold Mary Kay in their thoughts.

Ed Schlotterback was buried in Garrett’s Union Cemetery on June 26. A mechanically gifted, deeply curious, highly original character, Ed was well remembered per interesting stories at the June 25 GHS ’70 luncheon. Following the luncheon, several classmates saw Ed off at the Thomas Funeral Home. RIP Ed, you are indeed remembered.

Gery Barry has been vacationing back home in Indiana, and we had lunch together at Dave’s Fish Shack between Fremont and Lake Gage on July 12. He is doing interesting analytical work on health care management (cost effectiveness of various treatments), and has spent roughly 90 days in China throughout the past year. Gery is unlikely to make this month’s luncheon, as it will be his very last day in Indiana, but he very much enjoys connecting with classmates, and genuinely hopes to see more people here more often.

On Saturday July 14, Bob Bishop, Pat Casey, Jack Clark, Brian Custer, Mike Rhodes, and myself attended a BIG hog roast/party at Jim Burns’ place - there had to have been 200 people there not counting the band: toddlers young [near babies] and old [80+], with all ages between. More classmates had been invited, and all not explicitly invited would have been welcome, but it is hard to get the word out. Maybe the next time someone throws such an event, more awareness could be generated through prior luncheons and GHS ’70 bulletins such as this very first one.

Finally, I have learned from Dan Myers that Cindy Hathaway Myers is currently undergoing treatment for cancer, and they are both OK about sharing this news. Certainly Cindy and Dan will be in our thoughts and in our hearts, and we hope they will be able to attend some luncheons, as their increased demands may permit.

In Closing

That’s just about all for now, except please help spread the word: share this email. Anyone wanting to be added directly to the distribution need only reply to me, and I will add you.

Presently the electronic distribution includes 24 classmates [I have sent three classmates without email a hard copy], but so far only the first four have elected for their email address to be shown; the rest are hidden per the Bcc option.

If you are willing to let your email address be seen, please respond with “SHOW ADDRESS” in the subject line or in the email body.

If you want to share class news, a photo, etc, just send it electronically to me (along with descriptive text and your phone #), the sooner the better so it will make the next bulletin. The idea is to make these bulletins interesting whether or not you want to or are able to attend the luncheons.

We all grew up together in the Sixties, and now that we have arrived in our 60s, maybe it is time we got to know each other better!
